The cases where people have died involved large quantities of high-proof spirits and even then such incidents are rare. According to the doctor I discussed this with most recently, the main risk is that it might disrupt the gut flora. You can find the full discussion on fetlife in my writings. It raises from an article I have read stating that inserting alcohol via the colon is dangerous, because it bypasses the liver and gets directly to the blood system. While I want her to relax a bit, I would never want her judgement impaired nor for her to struggle to communicate. Also, @jukkar is partially correct - it is the volume and the concentration of alcohol that causes problems. This is why I do not use spirits, only beer and wine. If I ever do use spirits, they will be heavily diluted.
